The objective of monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) is to maintain, improve, and optimize a buildings energy efficiency and savings by monitoring energy consumption and system performance. MBCx uses remote energy system metering and monitoring with trend log capabilities to collect, store, analyze, and report data. Evaluating a building's energy management system through MBCx provides opportunity to reveal and diagnose faults and/or inefficiencies within the system, provides opportunity to enhance schedules and adjust temperature set-points, assists in detecting opportunities for energy and cost savings, and can ensure the continuation of energy savings; thus providing the building user/owner the knowledge to make informed and effective energy saving measures.
Monitoring-based commissioning can offer a more long term or continual approach to commissioning by evaluating the system for an extended period of time, detecting any degradation within the system or opportunities for improvement.
